Yes, Writing is a Career Path

And it needs attention, care, and strategizing.

I always wanted to be a writer.

And I was always told this was a near-impossible goal. I needed safe options.

So when I graduated, I worked in tech. I was a support rep at a startup, and then a support lead, on-track to be a manager. I took UX courses and, in my next tech job, and I was trying hard to get onto the marketing team.

This seems good, right? Except this was not what I wanted to do. I still wanted to be a writer, and I was still telling myself that this was an impossible goal. I had blogs with secret names and I prioritized having a sort of “corporate” identity that I didn’t want writing to interfere with.

But over time, I came to realize:

  1. More written content is needed now than ever before, and the internet makes monetizing extremely easy.
  2. I didn’t want to just sell one book or one movie. I want writing to be my full-time job. I want this to be my profession.
  3. I cannot have a tech career and give ample time to my writing. I am too exhausted.
  4. Tech is a fine field but it was never what I wanted to do, so I’m always looking for a way out of it. This means I’m not engaged with it. You…
