What It’s Like To Travel to Costa Rica During Covid-19.
The low-down on new restrictions and the process.
Here’s the disclaimer: Because this information is very timely and subject to change, please consult the embassy and Costa Rican authorities for changing requirements and information.
The New Requirements
Costa Rica has been open to all Americans since November 1, with new restrictions. While a Covid-19 test is no longer required, you must fill out a health form, have a returning flight, and purchase insurance that will cover you in the event that you become sick with Covid-19.
In the past, a bus ticket to nearby Nicaragua or Panama was enough to satisfy the onward ticket requirement, but recently they have become more strict and seem to prefer you have a leaving flight.
What’s more — The insurance has to cover 14 days of lodging in the event you need to quarantine. Because almost no insurance covers this particular requirement, you’ll need to purchase the Costa Rican insurance designed specifically for this purpose — through INS and Sagiocor.
If you’re young and healthy, the Sagiocor insurance costs $11/day or more, and the price increases with age and complicating health conditions.
