The issue is people get their ego involved. People pretend like they want to have factual, rational arguments, but things like the ego are very involved, especially online where tone cannot be conveyed. There is a tendency online to misinterpret, and because technology is powerful and a lot of people are paranoid of what it’s used for, there’s a lot of assuming that something sinister is going on. There are emotional factors at play that can’t be denied, but that people want to deny, and one is a general distrust of technology and another is the fact that we don’t “hear” or “see” the person we are talking to. There are likely more emotional factors at play that cause conversations to degrade…we are not computers, and this is a way of communicating we didn’t evolve for. It has to be learned.
