The Advice I’m Giving My Friend’s Mom On Retiring in Costa Rica

A lot of people ask for my advice when it comes to retiring in Costa Rica. I’m not retired, but I know a lot of people who have retired here, so here are the tips I’m giving my friend’s mom.

This is my opinion as of January 2024, and is not life advice for everyone:

Guanacaste

Guanacaste beaches are beautiful and you’ll probably pay the most here. But the weather is also hot and can be unforgiving. If you’re envisioning a life where you have air conditioning, a car, and a spectacular view of the beach, and you’re in pretty good health, then Guanacaste might be a good choice for you.

Central Valley

The Central Valley, like Atenas and Grecia, is cooler with better access to medical care. If you’re looking for a more walkable community and you don’t need to me on the beach, and you need some kind of medical specialist, then the Central Valley might be a better option. There’s a stronger, more tight-knit retirement community here as well.

Puntarenas

Back to the beach! Puntarenas offers more affordable spaces, and beaches like Jaco have all the amenities you could want, along with a walkable community. However, Jaco is…
