I Was a Treadmill Zombie, Too
Why gyms bum me out, and the touch screen machines aren’t helping
People do what is available to them, both emotionally and physically.
In a rush? Near fast food? You’ll probably eat fast food.
In a rush? Near a salad bar? You’ll probably eat a salad.
I’m tired of hearing how this is some huge moral failing that we need to overcome…it’s not.
If you’re around criminals, you’ll probably learn some things about committing crimes. If you’re around honest people, you’ll likely value honesty.
We adapt to our environments…this isn’t strange or new, and it applies to the gym as well.
And so the touch screen TVs on treadmills are alarming to me.
It signals to me that the people who make these machines want people to fail, to keep coming back to the gym, and to not actually reach any goals at all.
You cannot passively be present in your body any more than you can budget without math.
I’ve been using dance and yoga as a way to reconnect with my body (PTSD). And before I discovered dance, I made this mistake, too.
