I volunteered in Nicaragua helping kids with their homework & stay in school and it was soul crushing to all the volunteers to realize these people were intentionally poor so we could have cheap produce. A few quit before their contracts were up. The enormity of the system against these people is soul-crushing. These kids have to be absolutely perfect or their lives are derailed forever. You can’t take a semester off, get caught stealing candy, nothing. A fourteen year old dropped out of school to live with a 30 year old boyfriend. It was maddening. These kids have to have the maturity and foresight of adults from a very young age and even that isn’t enough. And they’re kept in a poverty cycle intentionally.
