Problematic Family Member: “You know, back in my day, dressing up like that wasn’t such a big deal. If it’s just a costume, it’s fine. It’s not offensive.”
Response: “How very interesting. I thought you might say something like that at this Christmas dinner while I was trying to mind my own business, so I have assembled a diverse panel to discuss this subject. They are on my speed dial. Would you like to call them and explain your views on costumes?”

Problematic Family Member: “They get special treatment for being minorities. That’s why I don’t want a minority doctor. They get everything handed to them. I have insurance. I want a white doctor.”
Response: “What a fascinating approach to finding a doctor! I have a Latina friend who pulled herself out of the hood and had to take on hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loans to become a doctor. Why don’t I just give her a jingle-jangle and explain that she actually had it easy?”

Problematic Family Member: “All those sick people are just mentally ill. It’s not natural to feel the way they feel.”
Response: “Didn’t your cishet son get arrested for the second time for drunk and disorderly conduct? Was that natural? Can you…
