As someone who used to moderate and do support, the sheer volume of reports is difficult to deal with. As a human being looking at the numbers, it’s so easy to feel terrified and overwhelmed just seeing how much is there. A fellow employee once told me it felt like emptying the Titanic with a spoon. I said it felt like shoveling sand at the beach. You get the idea…an endless task, with little reward, and lots of mental health repercussions.
But a site is only as good as the people on it, and Facebook seems to be a wasteland of trolls. I’m in a few good travel groups, but it’s hard to find one where men are not saying things like “if a woman travels alone, she’s getting what’s coming to her.” So many travel and expat groups are so full of snark that I cannot bother. There are always a few key members ready to pounce on everyone else.
The key to good groups seems to be a high barrier to entry, and the admins of those groups taking on extra work that they do not get paid for. It’s a true labor of love. Facebook is too busy keeping beheading videos off its site to monitor annoying trolls who like to disrupt discussion within groups. And unfortunately, just keeping bad content off Facebook won’t be enough to save it. It needs to focus on people having a good, emotionally healthy and productive time when they are on there. Right now, it feels like they’re just playing whack-a-mole.
